A piece in the Santa Cruz Sentinel highlights the processes of learning and collaboration that are making the UC Santa Cruz Satellite Reef a reality.
“The group has been gathering Wednesdays at UC Santa Cruz to join the international movement to crochet coral reefs in fabrics, recycled materials and former pieces of flotsam. Some never crocheted before the effort started in October. The effort, alongside an art installation on display through May 6 at the Mary Porter Sesnon Art Gallery at UC Santa Cruz west campus, is designed to drive awareness and conversation about coral bleaching and other hazards generated by excess carbon dioxide and rising sea temperatures. The movement also decries the amount of trash, especially plastics, afloat in the oceans.”
