From 2016 to 2017, the Dakota Access Pipeline protests against the unlawful expansion of oil infrastructure transformed the Standing Rock Reservation into a site of resistance. Dislocation Blues is what Hopinka calls “an incomplete and imperfect portrait of reflections” of the Standing Rock camp. Through juxtapositions of images and interviews, the video documents the acts of environmental activism, anti-militarism, cultural preservation, and Native sovereignty—as well as the kinship, community, solidarity, and joy—that emerged over the months. What appears are the futures that this collective resistance makes possible.
