Future Garden for the Central Coast of California, 2017-ongoing

We are pleased to present online tools for Future Garden for the Central Coast of California, 2017-ongoing, by Newton Harrison (b.1932) and his collaborator and life partner, the late Helen Mayer Harrison (1927–2018) and the Center for the Study of the Force Majeure. This combination art installation and scientific study was produced by the IAS in collaboration with the UC Santa Cruz Arboretum and Botanic Garden, where the garden project is underway.

Future Garden for the Central Coast of California is part of a larger endeavor of “Future Gardens” by the Harrisons, internationally renowned eco-artists and UC Santa Cruz emeritus professors.

In 2010, Helen Mayer Harrison and Newton Harrison founded the Center for the Study of the Force Majeure at UC Santa Cruz to pursue strategies that blend art and science to respond creatively and at vast scale to global warming and climate change. The Center for the Study of the Force Majeure brings together artists and scientists to design ecosystem-adaptation projects in critical regions around the world to respond to climate change.
