The Arts-led research project EXTRACTION, coordinated by TJ Demos of the Center for Creative Ecologies and A. Laurie Palmer of the Art Department, features an artist lecture program, film screenings, field trips, and a conference, interrogating the current cultures of extraction.

The Land Beneath Our Feet

The Land Beneath Our Feet follows a young Liberian man, uprooted by war, who returns from the USA with never-before-seen footage of Liberia’s past. The uncovered footage is embraced as a national treasure. Depicting a 1926 corporate land grab, it is also an explosive reminder of eroding land rights.

Investigating My Father, Wu Wenguang, 2016

Wu Wenguang is a foundational figure of Chinese independent documentary film and co-founder of the Caochangdi Workstation in Beijing. In 2010, Wu launched the multidisciplinary and collaborative Folk Memory Project to document the gathering of oral histories from the rural survivors of China’s Great Famine (1958-1961).
