The Institute of the Arts and Sciences was founded in 2014 with the aim of professionalizing the caliber of visual arts programming at UC Santa Cruz by fundraising for capital and operations and developing a professional exhibition space. The impressive roster of groundbreaking, multidisciplinary art exhibitions and social justice initiatives produced by the IAS expanded arts programming at UC Santa Cruz exponentially, and in 2022, the IAS moved into a new, climate controlled galleries home in the city of Santa Cruz. IAS has been transformative for the university and the region, generating excitement that has attracted the interest of major arts foundations as well as donors among alumni and the community, who have championed the IAS’s many programs. With over $5.65 million dollars raised since 2014, the IAS is the most successful private fundraising effort in the history of the Division of the Arts. Students now have many more opportunities to experience the arts at UC Santa Cruz than ever before.
