Freedom to Grow, a project seeded by the artist jackie sumell, is created in collaboration with a collective of women gardeners currently incarcerated in Central California Women’s Facility (CCWF), as an invitation to imagine—and grow—a world without prisons.
The recipes, paintings, plants, photos, and texts in Freedom to Grow reflect the restorative practices cultivated by the CCWF gardeners as they respond to harm through acts of care, growing vegetables and herbs, and making teas for their community. The women have all trained in community herbalism, having expertise in plant identification, herbal preparations, holistic wellness practices, and the cultural and ecological relationships between people, plants, and land stewardship. They cultivate love and connection in surroundings designed for deprivation and isolation, planting the terrain for prison abolition.
