Chloe Lew is a PhD student in the Bio-telemetry and Behavioral Ecology lab at UC Santa Cruz working with Dr. Ari Friedlaender and has worked as a research technician for the non-profit California Ocean Alliance since 2020. Her graduate research is focused on using passive acoustic monitoring to analyze soundscapes in Kotzebue Sound, Alaska. The study aims to understand the natural, biological and anthropogenic contributions to underwater ambient noise levels as sound is critical for marine mammals to carry out essential life tasks. Working with the Native Village of Kotzebue, we will integrate indigenous knowledge to explore the call behavior of species of interest to gain an understanding of their acoustic ecology, seasonal movement patterns and habitat use. Results of this work will inform conservation initiatives for Arctic marine mammals of the region.
