The IAS deepens MFA and PHD students’ research and engagement with the arts through a variety of programs and professional opportunities.

Research Fellowships

From year-long research positions to shorter fellowships, the IAS provides select MFA and PhD students at UC Santa Cruz experience in curation, arts education, and arts administration. Calls for applications for year-long fellowships are featured on our website and circulated to departments during the spring quarter for the academic year. Shorter fellowships are offered on a select basis.

Curatorial Fellowships

Select graduate student curatorial fellows collaborate with IAS curators and/ or faculty advisors to develop exhibitions based on their areas of expertise. Past examples include Barring Freedom and Solitary Garden, co-curated by Dr. Alexandra Moore (Visual Studies PhD, 2022), and Strange Weather, curated by Prof. Jennifer González and Rachel Nelson with curatorial assistant Madison Treece (Visual Studies, PhD Candidate).
