Walid Raad is an internationally renowned contemporary media artist. Dedicated to exploring the veracity of photographic and video documents in the public realm, the role of memory and narrative within discourses of conflict, and the construction of histories of art in the Arab world, Raad’s work is informed by his upbringing in Lebanon during the civil war (1975–91), and by the socioeconomic and military policies that have shaped the Middle East in the past few decades.
Perhaps most famously, under the rubric of The Atlas Group, a 15-year project exploring the contemporary history of Lebanon, Raad produced fictionalized photographs, videotapes, notebooks, and lectures that related to real events and authentic research in audio, film, and photographic archives in Lebanon and elsewhere. These ficitional archives are now held in museums around the world.
Walid Raad’s work has been featured in major solo exhibitions at the Hamburger Bahnhof, Museum für Gegenwart, Berlin (2006); Henry Art Gallery, Seattle (2006); Migros Museum für Gegenwartskunst, Zurich (2007); Museo nacional centro de arte Reina Sofía, Madrid (2009); and the Whitechapel Gallery, London (2010–11). His works have been exhibited at Documenta 11 in Kassel, Germany, The Venice Bennale in Venice, Italy, The Whitney Biennial in New York, and The Ayloul Festival in Beirut, Lebanon, as well as other events and museums throughout North America, Europe, and the Middle East. Raad was awarded a John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation Fellowship (2009); was selected as a finalist for the 2010 Hugo Boss Prize at the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York; and was awarded the Hasselblad Foundation International Award in Photography (2011). He currently lives in New York, where he is an associate professor at the Cooper Union School of Art.
